= this iPad model is for sale by Apple and recommended for use with TouchBistro.

Section 1. Notes

Note 1 – iPad Air 2 vs Mini 4?: We do not recommend the Mini 4 for use as a fixed POS. The full-sized iPad Air 2 and iPad Pro offer a better experience. However, venues that offer tableside ordering might consider the Mini 4 for use by servers. Food trucks with limited counter space may also consider using the Mini 4 over the full-sized iPad. We not not recommend the Mini 2 for use with TouchBistro.

Note 2 – iPad with Retina: also known as 3rd and 4th generation iPads. The 3rd generation iPad is not compatible with TouchBistro. Although the 4th generation version is compatible, we do not recommend sourcing used 4th generation iPads. Performance under the latest iOS may be unacceptable.

Note 3 – iPad Mini 3: The Mini 2 and Mini 3 have equal performance specs. The Mini 3 has an additional fingerprint identity sensor, which TouchBistro does not support.

Note 4 – Food Truck Hardware: Food truck configurations using a cellular iPad also require a Bluetooth receipt printer. If your non-food truck venue has access to cable or ADSL Internet (for example, quick serve restaurants or restaurants with tableside service), purchasing iPads that support cellular connectivity would be an unnecessary expense for non-food truck venues. Hence, food trucks with a cellular router are advised to purchase the Wi-Fi only model. For a greater discussion of hardware requirements for a food truck, see this guide.

Section 2. iOS

Your iPads need to be running iOS10 or capable of being updated to iOS10. See Older iPads below regarding iPad models that cannot run iOS10.

7.x

TouchBistro 5.9

9.x and earlier

Section 3. Minimum Memory

TouchBistro strongly suggests you only use your iPads for service purposes. We do not recommend using your iPads to run other apps or stream music. Hence we do not suggest purchasing iPads with greater than the base memory (typically 16GB).

Section 4. Older iPads

TouchBistro recommends always using the latest iPad sold by Apple.

We do not support:

  • The original iPad
  • iPad 2
  • iPad Retina (3rd Generation)
  • Mini 1

If you are purchasing iPads (new or used), please follow the iPad hardware recommendations noted above. Although we support iPad 4th generation, iPad Air 1, and iPad Mini 2, developing app technology may outgrow those iPads’ hardware specs/speed.  We would not recommend launching a new venue and sourcing older, used iPads. If you have an older iPad model (iPad 2 and above), we recommend using it in the near term for our KDS and CFD apps. However, we also caution sourcing older iPads for long term use with the KDS or CFD.

Section 5. TouchBistro Language Support

TouchBistro will display in English or Spanish automatically if your iPad’s default language is set for one of these languages.

Chapter 2. Router

Although other routers may work with TouchBistro, TouchBistro’s Support Department will only support:

1. Apple Airport Extreme

2. Select cellular routers for food trucks (ZTE MF275R Turbo Hub in Canada, Verizon 4G in the USA). For a greater discussion of hardware requirements for a food truck, see this guide.

Note: The ZTE Turbo Hub has only 1 LAN port. If you are going to plug in more than 1 LAN-based peripheral (for example, 2 printers, 1 printer and an iPP320, etc.), you will need to also purchase a network switch. The Verizon 4G router has 3 LAN ports.

Note: The USB port on the Airport is not used by TouchBistro. It is intended to to provide connectivity to peripherals like external hard drives that come with their own source of power. It does not supply enough power to charge an iPad.

Thermal – TSP100III (143IIIW) Wi-Fi Printer (We do not recommend this printer except for small quick serve venues)

Thermal – TSP650II/TSP654IIBI Bluetooth (This printer should only be used with a limited number of Food Truck configurations.)

Impact – SP 700 series (e.g. SP712ML/ME, SP742ML/ME) Ethernet Printer

Section 2. Epson

Please note, if you have Epson printers from a previous POS system, they may have proprietary firmware that is incompatible with TouchBistro. TouchBistro will only install and support Epson printers purchased through TouchBistro or one of its hardware partners. If you have Epson printers from a previous POS, TouchBistro cannot guarantee our Installation team can make your printers from a previous POS work with TouchBistro. This may cause a lengthy delay in your installation process.

Thermal – TM-T88V-325 Model: M244A with UB-E03 card (see this page about Epson printers designed for specific POS systems and incompatible firmware). Must be equipped with a single Ethernet interface port. Some models have Ethernet ports with external dip switches. These are the Type II and Type III cards and are not compatible with TouchBistro. Likewise the dual Ethernet/USB card is not compatible.

Impact – TM-U220B Model: M188B with UB-E03 card (the M188D version does not offer an automatic paper cutter). Must be equipped with a single Ethernet interface port. Some models have Ethernet ports with external dip switches. These are the Type II and Type III cards and are not compatible with TouchBistro. Likewise the dual Ethernet/USB card is not compatible.

1) Notes on Epson Printers

To configure the Epson printers with TouchBistro, you will need to download and run Setup Utility provided by Epson. You will also need a Windows or Mac computer present on site to set up the printer. Epson currently provides a thermal set up app for Windows and Mac OS. If you are setting up an impact printer, you can use the thermal printer Mac OS Setup Utility to set up the impact printer.

Epson impact printers do not support printing kitchen ticket table headers in red.

The Square integration is not compatible with Epson printers.

Section 3. Notes

Ethernet printers require an Ethernet cable run from each printer to the Airport Extreme Router.

USB/PARALLEL/IDN PRINTERS are NOT compatible with TouchBistro and will not work. See Do I have the Right Printer? for help determining if your printers work with TouchBistro. Using an adapter that turns your serial, USB, or parallel port printer into an Ethernet plug will not work with TouchBistro.

If you have both thermal and impact printers, make sure each is loaded and well supplied with the PROPER paper. If you load paper intended for an impact printer into a thermal printer, the thermal printer will not print. Thermal printers need a special heat sensitive paper.

We also support the Star Kitchen Buzzer.

Section 4. Voltage

Printers support 100 to 240 V AC, 50/60 Hz.

Chapter 4. Cash Drawers

TouchBistro supports the MMF Val-u-Line Series. It needs to be one of the printer-driven models (MMF-VL1616E-04/MMF-VL1616E-06) which uses an RJ12 connection. This connection looks similar to a telephone jack/cable but requires a special RJ12 cable. It goes from your printer to the back of the cash drawer. TouchBistro may work with printer-driven cash registers sold by other companies, however, for guaranteed compatibility TouchBistro suggests the MMF Val-u-Line Series.

Section 1. APG

If you purchase a non-MMF cash drawer (e.g., the APG line), ensure you purchase the manufacturer’s recommended cash drawer cable. Not all cash drawers use the RJ12 cable. See this image for a visual guide to the difference between the RJ12 cable and the APG cable.

Chapter 5. Barcode Scanner

TouchBistro supports the iOS-certified Socket CHS 7Ci portable barcode scanner.

Chapter 6. Mac Computer Purchasing Guide for TouchBistro Multi

Your Mac server computer configuration varies depending on how many iPads you’ll be using.

TouchBistro Pro will not run adequately on the low end 1.4GHz Mac Mini. If you have an older 2.5GHz i5 Mac Mini with 8 GB RAM and a 500GB drive, TouchBistro will work adequately on that machine for an up to 2 iPad solution.

You will also need a Monitor (w/ HDMI compatibility), a Keyboard (USB), and a Mouse (USB). You will need to keep these items on site at all times to update the software as well aid TouchBistro support should they require you to access your Mac computer.

Note: If you do not have a HDMI capable monitor, it is unlikely a HDMI converter (e.g., VGA to HDMI) will work.

Your Mac computer MUST BE HARDWIRED through an Ethernet connection. An Ethernet cable must be run from the Mac to your Airport Extreme Router.

Section 1. Using Other Mac Computers

Most multiple iPad TouchBistro solutions are built around the Mac Mini as it offers the smallest possible footprint and lowest possible price. However, you may run TouchBistro Pro on the iMac or Mac Pro as long as they have the same or better specs than the ones listed above (minimum 2.6GHz dual core processor and able to support an SSD Flash Drive).

You should not run TouchBistro Pro on a MacBook. The computer you run TouchBistro on must be hardwired to your router via a CAT5 Ethernet cable. The MacBook does not have an Ethernet port.

Ensure your non-Mac Mini solution comes with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse (or other pointing device).

Section 2. Mac OS

TouchBistro requires your Mac computer to be running 10.11 (El Capitan) or higher.

Section 3. Best Practices

It’s advisable that your iPads and Mac Mini must be shut down every night to ensure optimal functioning. You should not run other apps (for example, music streaming services) on your iPads or Mac computers during service hours to also ensure the best possible experience and speed. TouchBistro support may require you to uninstall or suspend certain third-party apps before being able to render support.

Section 1. uDynamo & iDynamo Swipers

As depicted above, the uDynamo plugs into the iPad’s audio port. The iDynamo plugs into the iPad’s bottom lighting port. Both units need to be kept charged via a micro USB cable. This is the type of cable that comes these days with a broad range of Android devices. Ensure you have a cable to charge the unit. Do not confuse the micro USB cable with the larger mini USB which came with older USB devices. Ensure the cable is also the micro B type, not the newer bidirectional C type found on newer high end Android phones.

1) Charging

The iDynamo’s micro USB charging port acts as a charging pass through to the iPad. If the iDynamo is plugged into the iPad’s lightning port and the micro USB is plugged into the iDynamo’s charging port, the iPad will get charged as well. However, for optimal charging, the micro USB should be plugged into a higher power socket adapter (the type that usually comes with the full sized iPad, for example). A computer USB port, the Airport router USB port, or the smaller power socket adapters will be inadequate to power and charge both devices.

Although the pass through connection on the iDynamo will let you charge your iPad, you cannot use the charging cable to sync your iPad with iTunes.
